A PLACE OF THEIR OWN MAY BECOME THEIR OWN PLACE

October 2005
Leuven, Belgium

This series of 80 photographs was developed during a visit to the city of Leuven. Several years ago, the numbering system of certain streets was changed, and residents were faced with having to change their addresses without having physically moved out of their homes. Changes were often made precariously, with new numbers written in chalk or tape strips covering old ones. Whichever method was used, there seemed to be some kind of resistance as these numbers shifted, for they implied a fictitious relocation that was in conflict with the sense of belonging to a place.
